ANAIM'S RESIDENCE

ANAIM'S RESIDENCE
ANAHEIM HILLS, CA

Subject property: Located in Anaheim hills, a residence of a 6,000 square foot residence with 3 car garage.
Program:
The client desired an expansion of their current residence to a 6,000 sq ft with a three car garage. The current house has a swimming pool located in the northern part n the lot, and enjoys a redeveloped vehicle approach at south side of the property. The Clients stressed the view to the south as the important view to the city where they indicated that is the reason of buying the house. The front of the house is facing the southern side of the property. The property in located on a hillside where the back (north side of the property) is sloped toward the house. The current house has a multi-level where the garage is about 4’ below the first floor. The client requested to remove the current sloped roof ceiling in the level room, and replace with a 20’ high flat roof ceiling. The client desired a Andalusian design or Moroccan house design.
Other program criteria:
-Room for the daughter facing the pool for her dogs.
-Room for the husband mother at the first floor level
-High ceiling at the kitchen
-Office for the husband next to master bedroom and accessible to both balcony and from the outside
-Other room for other at second level to be on suite.
-More balconies
-Cal room at west side.

Design approach:
To capitalize on the pre-existing large Balcony and move it to the west side of the property as far as feasible. Thus, creating an expansion opportunity for the remaining of the house. Didn’t over come the multi-story as a pre-existing condition, rather use it to the advantage of the design, where the level of the pool as the level of the current garage leaving an opportunity for the daughter room and the family room to be located where the garage is currently is. The current driveway draw visitors to front of the house, thus an opportunity to be drawn to a receiving court yard that would rely the visitor to an entry in other high ceiling living room and dining room space and the home owner to a smaller entry in the house foyer. Thus, making a clear distinction between public and private spaces. The kitchen ceiling enjoys a new height that procures difference in floor elevation of the main on suite bedroom above as desired by the client. The views muti-level interaction on a vertical sense only to equal the horizontal transitions. Where the living room high ceiling interact with the library as it surround it on the second level given a hierarchy and sense of space and utility. The height of the windows on the second floor that allow the light penetrate into the living room give the continuation of the second floor integrity. The foyer enjoys similar interaction where the main circulation to all room over view the foyer and the stairs to the on suite over the kitchen gives the sense of continuity where the balcony is received at the end of such. The master bedroom enjoys it identity as the client desired a living quarter semidetached from the remaining house. The breakfast nook looking at the family room from an elevated 4’ high gives an open communication and continuity on both levels with an inherited high ceiling of the family room. The tower designed over the foyer to allow the light to cast the shadow and light to re link the verticality of the structure. The continuous and flawless movement through out the entire house form the garage to kitchen to the living room where all utilities are placed on the path as to be utilized only to stand as a witness to the horizontal movements through out the design.

The Building Envelop
The envelop had to utilize the existing shape and mass of the building and the new addition. In addition, the envelope must describe the function of the underlying use of scape behind the envelop. No true style shall not be carried throughout the design starting with the envelop to the space within. Thus, the hierarchy should be establish as it pertain to the style exposing the hierarchy within. This the vertical articulation took it’s shape to built on the pre-existing house structure and carries the interior function. The style stood to be Moorish Andalusian throughout the envelop from all and every angle, enjoying it’s style as it is to be rather than forced to be though interpretation. Such envelop style of architecture was very complementary to the client demands and program, thus is was the right choice.
